Brewery Industry Case Study
Consistent Use of H1 Lubricants
At the Gans Brewery in Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate
Armin Lorenz is only the third master brewer at the Gans Brewery since 1945. Continuity and pride in the art of brewing are core values here. This regional brewery traces its roots back to the year 1580. In a few months, there will be an anniversary to celebrate: the Gans Brewery will have been in the hands of its current owner families for 150 years. These are long-standing traditions that foster a sense of calm.
“Beer takes time” - this is also Armin Lorenz’s approach, and it explains a key principle of the brewery. In the Gansbrauerei’s fermentation cellars, the beer is given the time it needs, according to the experienced master brewer. The tanks in which the beer matures over a period of four weeks before being bottled are correspondingly large.
However, the brewmaster is not taking any more time than absolutely necessary for the ongoing renovation and modernization of the brewery. When the complete renovation of the brewery began in 2009, the equipment was at the 1960s level. Since then, old technology has been gradually replaced with new equipment - always while the brewery remains in operation. This is because, given its location in the heart of the city of Neumarkt, there is no room for physical expansion. The technical modifications sometimes go so far, explains Armin Lorenz, “that we first have to check whether the building will even remain standing.”
ELKALUB H1 lubricants throughout the entire manufacturing process
When it comes to lubricants, the Gans Brewery and its brewmaster rely exclusively on ELKALUB. The products from this specialist in high-performance lubricants have been in use there for eight years: “ELKALUB’s lubricants are great,” says Armin Lorenz. The brewery uses only H1 lubricants. “There are always residues. You can never completely rule out the possibility that something might come into contact with the final product. So it’s immensely important to be sure that this isn’t a problem.”
Previously, the brewery used lubricants from various manufacturers.
What convinced them about ELKALUB is that “everything comes from a single source,” as the master brewer puts it. All products are tailored to the requirements of the food industry; the documentation and data sheets are consistent throughout. Everything is traceable. On the subject of lubricants, Armin Lorenz says: “Lubricants are generally getting better and better. At the same time, bearings are getting worse and worse. But even a poor-quality bearing will run if it’s well-lubricated.”
ELKALUB Lubricants in Action
GLS 794 / N
GLS 794 / N2 is a silicone grease developed for the lubrication of sliding surfaces and assembly work. In breweries, it is used for taps and valves; here, compatibility with beer foam plays a major role, which has been confirmed by the Institute of Brewing in Weihenstephan.
GLS 367 / N2
GLS 367 / N2 is a high-adhesion universal grease with excellent resistance to various media, designed for slow-rotating bearings, gearboxes, and sliding applications. At the Gans Brewery, it is used as a lubricant for bearings, gearboxes, and chains - including the gear drive of the lauter tun and the spindle of a chamber filter press.
GLS 381 / N000
GLS 381 / N000 is a gearbox fluid grease that offers excellent wear protection and pumpability in centralized lubrication systems. This H1 grease is well-suited for general bearing and gear lubrication in breweries.
LFC 3015
LFC 3015 is a lubricating oil used by the Gans Brewery for its pneumatic cooler.
FLC 3010
FLC 3010 is a universal oil spray. At the Gans Brewery, it is used for general lubrication tasks.
